I love surfing culture and I wanted to make a series of surface designs principally for boards, but also for associated apparel. I was inspired by the hallucinogenic patterns of tropical fish and wanted to fuse them with more abstract forms.
It was tempting to create these patterns in Photoshop to mimic the subtle transitions and patterns found on fish, but ultimately I opted for vectors as they can be scaled to fit the large area the board presents. On this enlargement you can see the wave-pattern overlays which was a vector-friendly solution. All the textured edges were procedurally generated with brushes so new regions can be made quite easily.
